<GRAY>: a hero for a villain, a villain for a hero

If playing a superhero game becomes more than a ‘game’, it could be a problem just by itself. A society where depends on a superhero, who is an individual, can’t be a healthy one, can it? If we dumped everything to him and he fall down sick, or fed up and quits the work, what would happen to us? Rather a group of bureaucrats, armed with an expertise and a sense of duty, is a hundred times more trustworthy than him. Of course, I know the bureaucracy has its downsides, too.

That’s the story of a genuine superhero: what if the superhero started the game with an ulterior motive? In fact, he’s only a crook who can’t be titled as a superhero.

The webtoon begins with a killing scene, ‘Gray’ the worldwide superhero killing ‘Pinoki’ the villain in broad day, openly in the streets. Unsurprisingly, Gray gets arrested right away. In the interrogation room at the PD, he starts to talk about his past out of the blue. Why he made up his mind to become a superhero, and how he became one. The ‘truth’ of Gray was completely different from what people generally thought of him: because the superhero was a fraud.

At least by the fact, Seolwon Lee is a second-generation CEO who inherited a company. ‘ARTTOY’, the company, seems to make toys or something like that. He is a ‘golden spoon’, in a buzzword these days. But, unlucky for him, the executives and the employees, the people near him, and his late father, he has no interest or ability on the business. Maybe it’s because of bad decision-making process of the corporation; because every time he gives a presentation in front of the executives, he becomes a mockery and his proposal is rejected. It seems it’s his role, if the influence from the old men are the problem, to throw them out from the company, but if he really does that then it will take this webtoon to a whole other genre, so I won’t say more.

Nothing going right for him, as a golden spoon, a second-generation CEO, and a superhero mania, Seolwon decides to create a superhero himself by chance, rather than selling toys of it. He was rich, so it was not an unthinkable idea. As he called an engineer and gave him some money, then a sleek superhero suit was there. Unfortunately, while it had similar appearances like those in the Hollywood blockbuster movies, it was not that good though. Even among the golden spoons there’s a class, isn’t it? That was the best. Anyway, he put on his suit and goes out to the streets of Seoul. To be a superhero, of course.

However, Seoul Metropolitan City was not Gotham City. Seolwon was not Batman, too. Maybe it could be a little better if he was able to hack all security cameras of Seoul, whether they’re government’s or not, but he wasn’t. Whenever he gets a word that a crime happened, he ran to the place only to see the Police already there or the case closed. Even if he managed to arrive at the place before the Police, it was him who was suspected as a criminal, as Korea strictly forbids private use of force, like in any country where the governmental authority is alive and well.

Eventually, Seolwon Lee, no, Gray, comes to create a ‘villain’ to be a superhero. One can say he’s a superhero because he becomes a superhero. He saves life of Jihwan Ryu, who dived into Han River to die for his helpless background, and Seolwon entrusts him the role of ‘Pinoki’. With a big money, of course. Then the evil Pinoki roams the streets of Seoul and panics people. The Police never catches him. At that time, Gray appears and repels Pinoki. After a fake fighting in a smoke screen, Pinoki’s criminal activity is repelled but both of them disappears. Like the actors fade as the curtain calls. All of these were set as planned.

However, if you drag your tail long, you’re likely to be stepped on. In this kind of frauds, one can easily anticipate that the crack would start from the insiders. As Pinoki’s crimes get bigger and bigger by scale, the person inside, Jihwan, feels a doubt about it. At the beginning, he feels a deep gratitude and goodwill to Seolwon, who needed him for the first time in his life and also gave him a large amount of money, but as Seolwon isn’t a man with great personality, their shallow relationship doesn’t last long. On the stage of Seoul, the show of two actors, which made the whole world to behold, runs toward its end.
