Daily Witch is a girl's love, fantasy webtoon by the artist Sungwon, published on Lezhin Comics Platform. As of September 2015, up to 16 episodes were released.

 

Witches from all over the world come to live in a community under the management of the World Witch Association. The story takes place as Misty, Eve, Gretel and Baba Yaga get to live together in the witch community of 13th Earth.

 

On the surface, it may seem like a four cut webtoon that depicts the daily lives of witches, however, the four panels do not consist of individual episodes and get connected as a one extended stories. It is not an omnibus webtoon but rather has the structure close to an epic webtoon. Only in terms of composition, a single episode story is divided into 4 panels. 

 

Even if an episode is divided into 4 panels, as the theme of the four panels is already determined and the panels only portray about such topic, the episode does not contain any useless scenes. Therefore, the webtoon is relatively easy to read as it's story naturally continues without any breaks in the middle.

 

The mainstream of the story reveals the background settings of the witches through the daily lives of the witches and proceeds the story with such means. Hence, the explanations don't get too long and the story doesn't fall into the swamp of drawn-out settings.

 

As witches living in modern times, they are constantly threatened by witch hunters and as the incidents caused by such crisis form the center of the story, the narrative definitely progresses. 

 

Since the witches in the webtoon fight using their unique abilities and different fantasy creatures come out to confront the witch hunters, the webtoon also has the qualities of the action genre to make a straightforward story development.

 

Though the parts where the witches are chased by / fought by the witch hunters are a bit heavier than the daily lives of the witches which have a light atmosphere, the webtoon still includes joke scenes in between to loosen up the mood and leads the story with the witches' pace to balance out the atmosphere.

 

Rather than giving unnecessarily big laughter, the jokes are safe enough to just lighten up the atmosphere and appeal the character's charms. 

 

In terms of the lesbian genre, female-to-female couplings are mostly illustrated. Though there clearly are elements of a girl's love, as the main story still belongs to the fantasy action genre, such aspects only serve to assist the core story. (They are like spices flavoring the main dish)

 

The quality of it's illustrations is generally high. Although this particular webtoon is the artist's debut work, as he had a long career as an illustrator before becoming a webtoon artist, the fundamental drawing skills are solid and the character designs are well crafted.

 

The artist's default selection of colors is fine too, but one unusual thing is his background color processing. The backgrounds are painted in solid colors, depending on the surroundings.

 

The background of the sky when the sun is setting is painted in red and the background of the interiors when the sun is set is painted in deep blue. Over such bold colors, only the outlines of the characters are drawn and their distinct colors are not shown for them to get buried in the background, giving the exquisite feeling as if they are submerged in lights.

 

Moreover, sharp contracts are applied according to the brightness of the light in the environment to make the color details stand out. This can indeed be a lesson for some artists who paint the characters in the same default colors in both dark and bright settings. (It may be irrelevant, but one of the webtoons that used contrast extremely well was The Secret of Dodo University by the artist DoveMayo.

 

Though the readers' reactions may vary as the webtoon stands closer to a character webtoon that highlights the charms of the characters instead of emphasizing it's story, they would all agree that it certainly has exceptional illustrations.

 

The final verdict is that I recommend this webtoon. Even if it has the format of a four cut webtoon, it is actually an epic webtoon rather than being an omnibus webtoon. The overall quality of the webtoon is superb in aspects such as general illustration, color selection, and character design. The story is also intriguing as a fantasy action genre that depicts witches in modern settings and the elements of girl's love are also added to give it an extra flavor.
