The protagonist 'Han Ji-han' is an ordinary high school student who loves to play games, but one day he suddenly gains a special ability. The ability was called 'The Gamer' which enabled him to render all situations in reality into game-like scenarios. Ji-han can acquire skills, level up, and see other people's levels and skills, just like game characters in real life. At first, he didn't understand how he has gained such ability, but he simply increased his strength and intelligence by studying and exercising. However, as he incidentally enters into The Illusion Barrier that was cast by Hwan Sung-Gon who could use summoning skills, he realizes about the potentials of his ability that appeared to him recently.
Meanwhile, Ji-han's childhood friend Shin Seon-il explains to him about his sudden ability in detail and becomes an important figure who serves as his assistant. As Ji-han first saw the level of Seon-il to be 25 with his special ability of 'The Gamer', and he had the title called The Heir of Cheonbumoon, Ji-han wonders why Seon-il had such higher level compared to other ordinary friends. However, it gets soon revealed that Seon-il also had a special ability just like Ji-han.
Seon-il, who have learned the traditional martial arts of Taekwondo and Taekkyeon and won a gold medal in the high school Taekwondo championship, informs Ji-han of The Abyss, the world in which the ability users kill each other and reveals to his that he is indeed The Heir of Cheonbumoon as his title suggests. According to Seon-il, Ji-han is a Natural ability User, and because Ji-han usually thinks that games are important as a video game fan, he was given the ability of The Gamer by Gaia. Whereas, Seon-il tells that he is an Acquired Ability User who gained his ability through training.
In the webtoon, even though Ji-han is in reality, as he has the ability to act as a game character, he can easily access various skills and raise his stats. For instance, Ji-han visits Seon-il's house and finds a book called Yeonhon Principle, which contains the basic skills of Yeonhonmoon Martial Arts. According to Seon-il's explanation, it must be very hard to learn the contents of the book. However, Ji-han obtains the skills by simply pressing a button to accept the skills of Yeonhonmoon, just like how video game characters can collect new skills with a single press of a button.
The main story of the webtoon depicts Ji-han, who has the ability to render the reality into a video game, achieving new skills and upgrading his levels through training. As a result, the descriptions of the new skills get written in detail, and the story primarily focuses on the repetitive training sessions of the hero for him to level up rather than investing in the development of a larger narrative.
As 'The Gamer' is a game fantasy webtoon that combines both aspects of a video game and a webtoon appropriately, it is definitely recommendable for those who generally enjoy video games to read without feeling out of place.
