When we call a thing pure, it literally means it is not diluted with any other substance. Juice made from either apple or banana is purer than apple juice mixed with banana, but we can’t say which one is better or worse. Purity of the genre is similar to that. Between addition of Thriller or Fantasy to Yuri and pure Yuri which focuses on the relations, we can’t say which one is better or more superior from the other. in this review is, as it’s understandable from the title, falls into the latter.

In the webtoon, Seowoo of Film club encounters Hayoung of Chinese major as their back-to-school party place coincides. Their first encounter was a bit distracting as Seowoo discovers drunk Hayoung by chance, and at that time Seowoo receives an impression of her. Although their department was different, Hayoung was also into the movies and she comes to join the Film club where Seowoo is the president.

To roughly sum-up, it’s ‘a love story between two female university students’. No shocking plot reversal or material more than that. The two gets close not too fast nor too slowly. Unlike Hayoung who seemingly had a girlfriend before, Seowoo seems be in her first time, but she doesn’t worry too much about it. Their relationship acknowledges the social attention and prejudice to a certain degree, but the work doesn’t bring their struggle against them to the front, either.

Instead, the content mostly occupying is lovey-dovey love story of Seowoo and Hayoung. On the matter how is this work as a Yuri and Romance, I want to say it has very solid basics. Some of the basics are: the process of two getting close from being a bit awkward after their first encounter and being friendly by meeting and sharing common interests repeatedly, the small jokes changing the atmosphere of the story, the physical affection they show as they start their relationship, and the trivia on movies inserted here and there. These contents are enjoyable not to only Yuri fans, but also to the readers of Romance.

 

One of the merits of this work I can’t miss mentioning, is the characters. A story can’t be fun when its characters are not alive. The characters in Blooming Sequence, especially the two protagonists Seowoo and Hayoung, are described as lovely as they are, to the extent the readers can share the attractiveness of each one for each other as they watch their love. Despite Seowoo and Hayoung have different personality or image to that of each other, or maybe because of the very reason, they are a well-matched couple.
