Girls are fighting in the world: <Odd Girl Out>

임하빈 기자 | 2019-10-18 09:19

There are many people out there and each of them has a name. The infant, the child, the juvenile, the adult, the young adult, the middle-aged, the old… such names are too many, and it looks like we can’t put each of them into a frame. In between the categories, there’s the girl. When we think of the word girl, freshness and mellowness come in our mind. Young girls have been glorified in the minds of people and told as a story, but they were hardly the subject of such a story. They were set as a first love of someone, or as destruction of someone, only either positively or negatively.

The girls, however, are diverse. The many girls in Odd Girl Out have their own stories. And they aren’t living the world full of delightful gigglings. For them, their world is constantly in war. Every girl has a history of her struggle.

The story begins with the protagonist, Nari Oh, goes up to a high school after successful dieting, and meets again Yuna Im, who was her childhood friend. Maybe all of you had a childhood desire to be more pretty with dieting. Not only with the goal of making a lover, sometimes we want that just to have the attention of people. Nari was full of such a dream at the entrance ceremony, only before she meets Yuna a.k.a Miss Perfect. She’s a pretty friend of her who makes passers-by look back at her. By chance, Seonji Im and Mirae Seo join the group and her plan gets totally broken. An ugly duckling among the beautiful swans, Nari describes herself.

People say the pretty women would live with no trouble at all, but they don’t. They have their own sadness, and Nari knows them. That’s the reason Seonji, Mirae and Yuna want to be a friend with Nari. In the world where puts them in the frame of their looks, only Nari don’t give them any frame. And that’s what a friend is.

A friend is, looking at each other without any prejudice or frame. Odd Girl Out depicts the process Nari becomes friends with the three girls. At the beginning, Nari sees the three girls with various prejudices and frames, but every time they meet and solve an event, she gets closer to them and become more comfortable. Like that, the history of the fight adds up. The events, being misled by a boy who likes Yuna, or solving Seonji’s problem of getting bullied, seem to be happen ‘because the girls are pretty’, but in fact they happen inside the frame of lookism put on them. The events are solved by destroying such a misunderstanding, and it gives Nari a wider perspective.

It’s not been long since the works dealing with friendship among girls attract attention of people. Sunny the movie is a good example. In the webtoon, Odd Girl Out is showing keen sensibility of girls and friendship among them, and at the same time, accumulating the history of the fight by constant destruction of the frame put on the girls. Girls are members of the world, too. In the world of their own, they always fight to reveal their true self, free from something. That’s the everyday life of girls.
