Healing Webtoongs for those of you who are exhausted from exams!
Hey everyone. Bad news for you guys, but I am back! Unfortunately, I wasn’t nominated for this year’s Nobel Prize in Literature. Well then, I should probably go for Manbooker or Goncourt. It’s now the exam period of the year for college students, and you can’t stop the exam approaching. People think the life is vain because the time cannot be stopped, but college students find this painful. Thus! Therefore! For this reason! What you need now is healings of your exhausted souls. Shouldn’t people who are sick of working and students who are tortured by exams be allowed to pursue their happiness escaping from pain only during the time reading webtoons? Life is a comedy the more distance you see it from, so how fun is it to see the webtoon characters’ adventures from one step away! So, let’s find some mind healing webtoons to ease our minds.
If you have been worrying about me since I was gone for two weeks, I was busy taking tests because I am still young!
1. ho!
The webtoon [Ho!] by Uksoo basing on the real story of a guy who started tutoring a deaf student and ended up marrying her had been a weekly recharge station for readers. The webtoon starts with telling how the story will end as the couple says they are going to tell their parents about their relationship. Then it goes back and continues to tell us about how they got married and how they live together every day, which makes readers to smile throughout the webtoon. There are no twists or unexpected developments of the story in this webtoon. Readers get slowly immersed into the story even though they already know how it ends.
This is thanks to Uksoo’s unique storytelling style. Because of his distinctive mood, readers get to keep on reading. Ho being cute is the second reason!
2. Moonlight on the Mountain
This webtoon is a full-scale road movie by Son Jangwon cartoonist, who actually have a Ph.D. in geology. The webtoon episodes are about Wonkyung Oh, who was geologist in the past and now unemployed, and Walri, cute fairy of the Hongwal-Ri fault, going on geology adventures. There are no better words than ‘perfect healing webtoon’ to describe this webtoon. Walri’s cuteness is beyond words that you must see her. If you are craving for some geology and a cute fault fairy, what about reading [Moonlight on the Mountain]?
3. Viva Santiago
We all sometimes want to escape from our daily lives, so we wish to travel. Everyone desires to go and take off to somewhere outside. We always deny and hide this desire, and we stop people who try to follow this desire. This is perhaps why some call this desire as rebelling or escaping instead.
Viva Santiago is about suddenly deciding to travel. I mean the protagonists group doesn’t wander around randomly without destination, but when you see them feeling hospitality and thankfulness to every people they meet on the road, you want to start travelling as well. This one might not be a ‘healing’ webtoon actually, because we will be disheartened by the fact that we cannot just leave to travel like that. Then this better be called a vicarious satisfaction webtoon instead.
4. Annara Sumanara
In fact, ‘healing’ webtoon is the most ambiguous genre. We will never know in which part readers feel their minds are healed or not. Therefore, ‘healing’ is rather a subjective matter. If I just cried after [Amanza] without feeling cathartic, then the webtoon is just sad not ‘healing’ for me at least. For the same reason [Annara Sunamara] was a ‘healing’ webtoon for me personally. With emphasis on white and black colors and beautiful collage techniques, it displayed fairy-tale-like atmosphere. The story that asks about the dream and reality brought me some great comfort and catharsis.
