Just as almost all Koreans love YouTube around 2018, I often spend time on YouTube. Since I didn't sign up for the "premium service" that Google has been pushing for years, I naturally see ads. Recently, webtoon ads are often seen. It would be more accurate to say that it's an advertisement for Resin Comics, but the work called 'Mosquito War' probably occupies the biggest part among Resin's YouTube ads. I'm not an advertising professional, so I'm not sure how effective YouTube advertising will be, but at least it's due to YouTube that I decided to read Mosquito War. They made it in a way that looks quite interesting.

The first thing to point out is the title is <Mosquito War>, and the advertisement shows like 'a life that killed humans the most ~ a danger due to mosquito', but it is not related to mosquito at all. When many hear about an apocalypse due to mosquito, usually come up with an image like mosquito might have critical poison, spread a highly contagious disease, or such a crisis (which I did), but Mosquito War is far from the common idea.

The mosquito which appears in this work is just an existence like an alien that hostile to the human race. From what it appears, rather than a mosquito, was completely out of insect form. Like the bipedal monsters, who wore thin fabrics over their heads? In Part 1, a less plausible explanation is that mosquitoes have sucked human blood, accumulating DNA and undergoing mutations. However, aside from scientific coherence, it doesn't have to be a mosquito in this case. The subject of mutation could be a fish, like in<Tide's territory>, or it could be a pet abused by humans or an ant who has learned the wisdom of humanity. If any readers were expecting a post-apocalypse by a full-scale mosquito attack, pay attention. To recap, the mosquitoes in Mosquito War are more of an alien life that invaded Earth, not the mosquitoes we know.

Then, let's dig in and look at the contents. At the beginning of the work, the war between mosquitoes and humanity is almost finished as the latter's defeat. The number of surviving humans is very small, while mosquitoes are far surpassing humans. There is only one hope for humanity. It's a doctor's research that noticed it before the mutation happened. After discovering his lost research site, the human race seeks to amass all of the surviving forces to attract the mosquitoes and collect a few elite troops to retrieve the doctor's records. The main character, Kisses, belongs to this elite troops.

To leave the spoiler as small as possible and to explain it to the minimum, in fifth-episode, mankind regains that hope. It's a little different direction than the thoughts before. Dr. Kim's research records—exactly Dr. Kim, who has escaped the human category—there were epic battles and unavoidable sacrifices in the process of retrieving, and far from the mutated mosquitoes, it is the worthy result acquired by struggling with almost any demon-like mosquito.

After Dr. Kim, who became superman as strong as mosquitos, joins the human race's side, the story becomes a bit tempered atmosphere. The monster that blows tens of thousands of mosquitoes in a single gesture has become an ally, so the era of mosquito ended and it seems an age of the human race arrived. However, since this work is not another world story of the beginning of 2,000s, so all the problems cannot be solved in such an easy way. If you look at the mosquito camp (?) for a while, it seems that Dr. Kim is also in the category they can expect, and Dr. Kim himself does not seem to be in a stable status.

Even though it wasn't the first image I expected (expected) after seeing an ad on YouTube, it's definitely fun to check out. First of all, the atmosphere of drawing, directing and development fits quite well. It was also good to see modifying the material, that can sink to the bottom without end, with proper humor and meta gag. The story eventually shows the changes caused by mosquitoes (Alien life with mosquito's mask), and borrowing their mouths to make some sort of huge social experiment or philosophical inquiry. It seems it did not lose the balance between the heavy concept of the topic and popular webtoon. Regardless of which side you prefer, it is worth to check out. It is a work that cannot leave out such an expectation.
