When we think of the author Cho Seok, it comes to our mind that he’s a comedy guy. Maybe it’s because of The Sound of Your Heart, which he has serialized for more than 1,000 episodes without a single pause, but other than that, in fact, he has shown his outstanding talent as a storyteller. Considering his other works, Territory of Tide or Lighthouse of N, his stories indeed have somewhat that of Cho Seok, and they have certain charming points.

In that sense, his new webtoon Moon You is full of Cho Seok’s charms. When I read it for the first time I was a bit surprised that Cho Seok draws this kind of webtoon, but as I went on each episode it was the expected of Cho Seok. This story is quite serious. <Moon You>, who was sent to the Moon to prevent an asteroid destroying the Earth, becomes Humanity’s last survivor as he is left alone there and he sees the Earth destroyed despite the operation was a success.

He frustrates. So, he wills to die. But he fails frequently, with every method. He tried to strangle himself but he couldn’t take off his spacesuit, and the gravity sabotaged him when he tried to a fall from a high place. He couldn’t take off the spacesuit either, because it was too scary to be torn into pieces to death. Then, he tried to push his body limit to its limit to die of exhaustion, and he tried to read books to not fall asleep to die of sleep deprivation. 

But that wasn’t easy, too. The Moon was too perfect. As it was originally for more than 100 people, food, resources, and anything else were abundant; and now he only happened to own a good body and brilliant knowledge. Nevertheless, he starts to suffer an emotional instability: the loneliness. It started making his brain confused. At this point, however, a shocking story appears.

The Earth was damaged indeed, but thanks to the humanity, the threat was only a disaster not enough to end the humanity, which means the Earth was not finished. Meanwhile, an artificial satellite, launched to check those who remains on the Moon, lost its place to land due to the disaster.

Because of that, people came to watch his doing with their electronic devices. To the countless people on the Earth, without his permission, in a distorted way and without edit. In this story which puts us in mind of The Truman Show, there are subtle humor points, but they don’t distract the work. While the story skillfully moves back and forth thorough humor, seriousness, and the middle of them both, the narrative is quite calm.

Loneliness of a person, and being left alone. In the thought and the misunderstanding of people contrary to the emotion, how will it end up? This a high-quality story, following Territory of Tide, brings heart pounding curiosity to the readers, with the unpredictable ending.
