Dead Days, "A High Quality Zombie Webtoon that Feels like Watch Movies "
<Dead Days> is one of LINE's Sunday Webtoons which is being published as the first title of the artist DEY's 'Gumeum (Black) Fantastic Series'.
It is also the artist's debut title.
The main character is 'Yeo Jin-gook', an ordinary 16 years old boy. The webtoon begins by looking at a sudden zombie apocalypse that outbreaks one day from the main character's eyes. Later, as more characters appear, the story gets created by conflicting views and positions of different characters.
The webtoon boasts an exceptional quality which makes the readers feel as if they are watching a movie, and thus, they say that the word 'cinematography' fits the webtoon better than just 'drawing style'. Moreover, as the artist is producing an amazing amount of 'volume' in such quality, if the news of the artist's health problems sometimes come up, it indeed makes the fans concerned. Hence, the webtoon is receiving most requests from fans for it's 'movie adaptation' along with many praises.
And as always, such popular webtoon tends to collect several malicious comments. However, specifically for <Dead Days>, the webtoon gave rise to conspiracy theories. There is a description of "voodoo" that comes out in the story of the webtoon, and it is indeed an important part of the story as the cause of the zombie apocalypse.
Yet, some extreme religious groups claim that the webtoon is a conspiracy work of Demonism by insisting on theories such as 'the commercialization of voodoo zombies' which very much makes the readers sad.
However, such issue could also be accepted naturally as one can regard it as the proof that people are so immersed in the webtoon.
The first season of the webtoon which began it's publication in 2014 was finished as of Episode 40, on 18 April 2015. <Dead Days Zero> which started being published from June 2015 has the storyline that serves as the prequel to it's predecessor to answer many questions one by one.
It was one of the climaxes for 'Kwak Bin-do', who showed the most evil sides of a human being and could easily be deemed as a 'psycho', to truly demonstrate the qualities of 'the king of the mad world' in the first season.
As <Dead Days Zero> portrayed the birth of 'Kwak Bin-do' who had so strong presence in the first season, it also has gained a lot of positive reviews from the fans.
Since the praise of the fans are ever increasing as the days go by, I would like to mention about the artist DEY's way of publishing his work for once.
Despite that the webtoon has already earned people's favorable evaluation of being a high quality 'artwork' overall, the artist always delivers considerable volume, develops his directing skills and attempts various techniques to create the webtoon <Dead Days> that is still very much appreciated by the fans.
'Zombies' have indeed become a separate genre loved by people all over the world. Proper 'zombie' genre was yet to be introduced in either Korean movies or TV shows. However, as such a high quality work involving 'zombies' has finally come out among 'webtoons', it certainly proposes a way for 'webtoons' to present their potentials as a media in the Korean market.
Moreover, since many works depicting 'zombies' as their material have been pouring into the movie or television industries of overseas, their qualities were subsequently declining. Therefore, it is also quite notable that a title of such quality was produced in the field of 'webtoons'.I would sincerely recommend <Dead Days> to anyone including people who are new to webtoons, zombie movie enthusiasts with strict standards and existing webtoon readers who are searching a high quality webtoon.
