SNS is an abbreviation for Social Network Services. It refers to online service that builds a network of relationship among people who share their specific interests or activity. 

In short, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, etc. we commonly encounter are SNS. It becomes so common these days that there are just few people who don’t have SNS at least one. 

Before Facebook or Instagram, the most popular SNS service in Korea was probably Cyworld. 

People could have their own mini homepage after joining as member and was able to upload picture, write post and leave comment in the mini homepage so that they could communicate each other. The most differentiated characteristics from Facebook or Instagram was that people could create character called Minimi, which gave a new fun to make various styles. 

At that time, there was a book called Uljjang (refers to beautiful person). So the pictures of pretty and handsome ordinary people became as popular as celebrities, and some people even made debut as celebrities. As such the pictures of pretty and handsome people were the secret to increase the number of visitors in mini homepage. But for Instagram, the most popular SNS these days, hashtag is used to attract people’s attention. 

Hashtag is to put # in front of words. When other people enter a search word, the posts containing the word with this hashtag are appeared as search results and people can see my posts through this. 

If people who visited my account by accident like the posts I uploaded so far and they want to see them consistently, they will apply for Follow to me. If you have follows more than average, you can take a step closer to what we call ‘influencer’. 

The reasons for doing SNS will vary from person to person even if they don’t take influencer as a job. 

Some may do SNS to record their daily life like a dairy and see them again in the future, some may do it for communication with others, and some may just enjoy receiving attentions from others. 

Hashtag is very important in SNS, and there is remarkable webtoon which interprets hashtag (#) in a different meaning. It is a series of ‘Flat Diary’ on NAVER Webtoon. 

Flat Diary, which has just started to publish series, expresses about the title of Flat Diary as followings.

‘There is a trend in diary, and ‘#’ daily lives are loved more than others. A world where I can write a diary for others not me… Yeah. I became afraid I’d lose myself while pursuing # stories in the world. The stories I’m going to tell you from now on are the diaries I’ve written for myself.. flat (b) diary than other’s daily lives!’ 

Flat diary approaches the mark ‘#’, which is recognized as hashtag, as sharp (#), above semitone, and flat (b), below semitone, that are used in the music. In this sense, the title alone makes us to think how this story will be like. 

This work, a healing webtoon that develops the story with daily lives, gives deep sympathy on daily lives we all may experience in reality. So as you read it, you will get all choked up or just smile involuntarily. 

For me, the episode ‘Tangoo’ touched my heart than any other episodes. I think it was more empathetic because I also have a dog. 

There is a character named ‘Tangoo’ in this work, who always appears with a dog in the arms. 

It is an episode about how Tangoo got to have puppy Tangoo. Main character talks about people who buy puppy as an item and return it because simply they don’t like it. The story is about how main character has named the French Bulldog, which was looking for his third master, as Tangoo. 

In fact, I’ve seen the theme of misconception about abandoned dogs or companion animals in other webtoons. But the reason I got touched with this work is that the story didn’t blame people who buy, sell and abandon puppies like things, rather it shows their situation calmly. 

There is no such criticizing or points out that it is wrong in the contents. It is just up to readers to see and think the episode. 

I think the attraction of this work is that it describes daily lives calmly and gives readers something to think after reading. 

In addition, the main character is a very familiar figure who is not too good and easily frustrated. That is why I got more empathized the story. The main character also did mistakes anyone can do. But I feel the courage I don’t have by seeing his attitude to admit his mistake. 

It is true that the webtoon with pretty and awesome characters, great events and epic stories attract attentions and those works are fun. 

However, as our lives can’t always be spectacle, this webtoon also has a sensibility that is calm but slowly filter into our minds.  

I’m impressed by the title of Flat Diary, which would express flat daily lives rather than sharp and I’m once again moved by the special view to see the daily lives of writer. 

If you want to find sensibility you lost in your daily life, I strongly recommend ‘Flat Diary’ which you can see various views of the world. 

This is a work which I can expect what kind of different daily lives will be shown, or what things will it give to us to think.
