I’m the only guy in a school full of girls? There is a cartoon on Line Webtoon that thoroughly reflects the harem fantasy of men, and this is [Girls of the Wild’s].

Line Webtoon [Girls of the Wild’s] is written by Hun and illustrated by Zhena. The story revolves around the only male student ‘Song Jae-gu’ and fearsome teen ‘student fighters’ at Wild’s High School, which recently became co-educational after its long (?) tradition of 47 years of being an all-girls school.

Although the students who are trained in martial arts are scary, most female characters drawn by the female artist are very interesting and cute, so it sufficiently shows the charm of a harem genre. Plus, with the setting of a ‘martial-arts-specialized private high school’ where we can see the amazing action of female characters, it feels like a complete gift set.

Also, it is considerably refreshing (?) to see Panchira (a fan service that deliberately exposes women’s panties, etc.) that can be usually seen in martial arts + high school girls combination. It is very rare to see this appear in Line Webtoons, which is known to be very strict in implementing its guidelines. However, the series became very popular from the beginning, and it is still ranking as the top one webtoon among other Sunday webtoons.

With its beautiful drawing and unique characters, plus a special setting of female fighters, the webtoon gained popularity regardless of gender, and its traction can be seen through character figurines, various coterie magazines, and so on.

However, as the webtoon has been going on for quite some time, it also faced some challenges such as ‘there’s no communication,’ ‘the male protagonist doesn’t get featured too much,’ ‘the plot is developing so slowly,’ and so on. In particular, due to its stereotypical development, many viewers were concerned that the webtoon is following the footsteps of other typical long-standing series. 

 Personally, I feel that the ambiguous position of the male protagonist ‘Song Jae-gu’ is annoying to the point that he has been called the Top 3 Stupid Eunuch due to his insensitive personality (where he would get repeatedly beaten up by the girls, or get rescued by them). As a man, I feel secondhand embarrassment from the character.

But! Recently, unnecessary settings such as gangsters and chaebol (conglomerate) juniors have been more or less fixed, and the webtoon has been focusing on the conflicts surrounding Song Jae-gu and other main characters, which makes  the fans cheer again. This shows the we cannot ignore the strength of a top 1 webtoon. 

 

As it is a story about ‘fighting’ illustrated by a woman, it seems like the sweet romantic fantasy of the school life suits better rather than martial arts, and it looks like the webtoon has found its direction again.

I believe that the stable drawings and styles, plus the girlish colors, makes it have the ‘highest standard in all of Line Webtoons’, and this is how I also felt when I read ‘Pet Diary’, their previous work. That is why ‘fighting girls’ have its unique charm.

Even if the webtoon is a bit dull due to its prolonged series, I am still looking forward to the rest because even if there is no romance or action, it could easily go in any direction or production even if that meant going full-on harem as it is a story full of potential.

In particular, it is a nice webtoon to read if you are a male reader, as you would envy the male protagonist, and also if you are a female reader, because you would envy the female characters. With various characters and funny moments, it is a comic that I would wholeheartedly recommend.
