The webtoon describes itself as 'the story in which high school students participate in a martial arts competition called God of High School (aka G.O.H) that grants any wish upon winning'. Yet, in reality, it certainly isn't. The story of gods with the faces of high school students would be the true story of God of High School. (In fact, the title already indicates of such foreshadowing.)God of High School is a major webtoon that occupies a top rank in LINE Friday Webtoons and is indeed a long-term series. I don't know if the artist envisioned the whole story from the beginning, or extended the world of his webtoon while publishing his work (By looking at the foreshadows in Part 1, it is likely that he had visualized the story beforehand). From the beginning of the work, he threw various Easter Eggs to attract the readers' interests and earned an enormous amount of attention.

The overall story of the webtoon is quite simple. High school students from each region participate in the martial arts competition called G. O.H with their wishes. The competition gets held under the formal reason of selecting the strongest high school students in the world and the main characters and other groups who participate in the competition become involved in deeper events, gradually expanding the world of the webtoon. The atmosphere of the early story was largely silly and gave the impression of being quite light. The artist's unique sense of comedy and humor are mixed to get conflicting comments. The comments claim either that such codes are too childish and dull, disturbing the reader's immersion or they rather balance out the mood of the webtoon.

As the webtoon focused on the actions that the readers can easily discern and enjoy, it tried not to create a heavy atmosphere. However, as the story became way darker as the webtoon progressed, explicit and cruel depictions often got to surface. 

The webtoon adopts the general form of action comics aimed for boys in which the battles take place on relatively safe match rings by the teenager characters until the national championship chapter. Hereafter, the death matches that risk everyone's life which can be regarded as backstage stories form the main plot. As the webtoon reaches the middle chapters, the nature of the webtoon changes completely. The webtoon represented the typical form of action comics aimed for boys that emphasized hard work, persistence, and friendship (in which the talented main characters keep evolving) in it's early phases. However, as the webtoon approaches the middle chapters, it retrieves all the theories that were scattered throughout it's early stages and the main character 'Jin Mori', who actually was The Great King of the Heavens recovers his power and memory of the past and discovers his prime strength once again. The webtoon then portrays conflicts of various interests and values between him and other opposing celestial gods by mixing them with seriously dark elements.

The webtoon also reaches it's heydays with the return of Jinmori's prime powers. One of the reasons why the webtoon enjoys it's glory days during this period is because the protagonist finally gets to emerge as an overpowered character who has completely evolved. We read comics to is gain substitutional satisfaction. We feel vicariously satisfied by putting ourselves in the position of the main character who became so strong that no one else can even dare to challenge him. Moreover, the theories about the Jin Mori's identity had already been suggested from the beginning, and the moment he recovered and awakened all his powers acted as an enormous cider, providing exhilarating pleasure to the readers.

Since then, the battles between Jin Mori who has regained his strength and the gods who would appear in the myths of the world are the best big matches that incite great expectations. The Stone Monkey a.k.a The Great King of the Heavens who even the Jade Emperor feared of (In the webtoon, he gets portrayed as the leader of demons), Zeus, the ruler of Olympus from the Greek mythology, Uriel, one of the biblical archangels, Tathagata from Journey to the West, who locked The Great King of the Heavens in a stone mountain, and Shiva, the god of destruction from the Hindu mythology, and also, 666 Satan, the cause of all evil whose name indeed makes us creepy. Part 5 of the webtoon, Ragnarok, depicts the battles between the world's strongest classes. I consider these episodes to be the best episodes demonstrating the actions of God of High School in all aspects of drawing, directing, and scale. Readers were much excited to see the awakening of Jin Mori and his party and also the battles between such powerful characters that would only be found in myths. The tension of the story was sublime because they all were the strongest characters in their respective myths. But unfortunately, Part 5 ends in vain, and when the webtoon enters Part 6 (re: A Battle with The Gods), what the heck? Jin Mori, the main character, doesn't come out and strange characters get introduced instead.

Moreover, due to the settings, Jin Mori loses his power as The Great King of Heavens, and the new protagonist, who calls himself Dan Mori, participated in the G.O.H competition to treat his brother's incurable disease, which is rather incomprehensible story development. From the reader's point of view, they don't like revisiting the G.O.H competition, to begin with, and yet, as the narrative reveals that Jin Mori who had reached the level of 'Absolute God' at the end of Part 5 has indeed lost all his powers and needs to start again from scratch, the webtoon gets criticized by many readers, causing them to leave the story. Of course, the artist would have created these settings to show different angles of the main character under his intention, but I believe Jinmori was too extremely nerfed as a character. In addition to the character settings, as the story development and the drawing often showed conflicting aspects to the early parts of the webtoon, and readers were disappointed even more.

The webtoon has proven it's competence by portraying an attractive world that integrates various mythologies and solid settings, impressive action sequences and unique characters that deserve attention in any situation. Although the webtoon is suffering from a slump due to the frequent missteps, I sincerely believe and support that the webtoon will demonstrate its value as an exceptional work once again as a reader and a fan of the artist.
