Black-and-white webtoons—most of the impressions we have of these are that they have a heavy and static image. They do not use various colors, but by using only a few colors, these give a strong meaning and impact. I picked out 3 webtoons that provide us with dramatic effects, and that will make us think about the meaning of color.

 1. Annarasumanara / Ha Ilkwon / Line

In Ha Ilkwon’s story, color shows an even greater effect. In her black-and-white world of frustrations and impoverishment, seems to show the dullness of life in her black-and-white colors, and in contrast, the brilliant, dazzling colors of the magicians provide readers with a fantastic effect as if they were watching a movie. 

What meaning does it contain when a girl who has nothing meets an unrealistic man, and an unrealistic space between them? Even though it is a fantasy, the meaning of colors in a beautiful, black-and-white world represents fantasy and hope. It also seems to foreshadow the black-and-white girl’s future, which suits her very well.

 2. About Death / Sini, Hyeono / Line

There is no color in the world of death. There is also no light. That is why the space after death is always quiet, and there is a god who listens to all of their stories. He is an ambiguous being, and his name and age are unknown. But through him, people get the chance to look back at their death, and their static recollection makes the readers sympathize with them, and get moved by their stories.

The color in the webtoon represents when they were alive. Just like how colors contain meaning, and create a certain mood by bringing them together, being alive is similar to having color. On the other hand, those who are dead have no color or contrast, and they calmly float away. The contrast shows a clear picture between death and life.

3. Spectrum Analyzer / Dogook / Line 

, a comedian who cannot speak, and , a hair designer. They are all black-and-white. However, the colors that rise among them are not as sharp, but leave a strong impact. Ironically, majority of the colors are focused on her. Even the red lipstick she chews, and the cigarette with rainbow smoke that gave them their first chance to meet, are all focused on her.

  

 

So, what does color mean in this story? It is her, . All of the colors shown in the webtoon are unclear in shape, but they capture the readers’ attention. The same goes for her. No one knows who she is, what kind of person she is, yet she is loved. She is an ambiguous being, and as intensely stimulating as the colors that we see in the webtoon.
