Developing Skills, Unfortunate Narrative [Spoiler Alert] LINE 2016 SHRIEK

The dreadful LINE horror series is held every summer. Until last year, it only became the stage to publicize the artist Horang's name each year nationwide, but it seems that the editorial department has recognized such problem. This year, all the titles came out in front of us, armed with forced scrolls, special effects, and sounds. But if one asks how superior were the qualities of the titles, I would say that the narratives were rather disappointing as the titles focused so much on scaring people.

1. A Ghost Job

As the protagonist comes for a part-time job, the ghost in the haunted house takes his body.

The author knows how to make the direction tense before the ghost appears. It is a nice short story.

The ending where the protagonist gets sealed in an ambiguous state, neither ghost nor human is also impressive

2. Live

There seems to be little difference in material between Internet Broadcasts and Fake Documentaries, and it is unnatural to have the viewpoint fixed on the desk. If the broadcaster had come out to the abandoned house for coverage, the webtoon would have to show the reporter's point of view. Since the protagonist is sitting at the table throughout the entire narrative as if he is going to have body sushi, it is unconvincing that the ghost is dwelling in the location even if he explains that it is an abandoned house. The content is fine, but the approach to the material was a bit disappointing.

3. Scratching

Ghosts too use their heads in the age of bitter competition. The story composition is also good as it brings an old story to modern times.

4. Footsteps

The ghost who wanders the street punishes the man who walked ahead of it. The purpose of the ghost is unclear as it doesn't just roam around to kill people from the beginning. It is the webtoon's advantage to showcase Korean style of horror as it introduces the face of Jayu-ro ghost and involves close-up scenes like the days of Whispering Corridors movie series. The cleverness of the story that didn't reveal the ghost's face until the climax is good, but it's face that was unveiled at last was less scary than I thought, spoiling one's fun.

5. Spirits

The title could have been a lot of fun if it was included an episode of an exorcism comics rather than horror webtoon series. It was difficult to accept it as a ghost story because it focused on the process of bringing out demons and defeating rather than the horror itself which would make people tense. The attitude of the ghost that calmly tells you to yell is rather impressive.

6. Umbrella

Vague in many ways. The reason why the protagonist doesn't leave the umbrella that makes her feel bad every time or why she buys a new umbrella is unclear. The reason why she goes out with the specific umbrella at the end is likewise unclear. As there would definitely be a store that sells an umbrella within 5 minutes of walking distance in the middle of the city, there has to be a reason for taking such a risky adventure. And the motivation of the ghost who has not come out from the beginning to keep poking around is further unclear.

7. Tabloids

The focus of a ghost story is to arouse the readers to feel that such incidents can happen in their reality for some reason. Creators portray ghosts in dark back streets or under beds for a solid reason. Any narrative finally becomes a ghost story when it feels that attached to us. However, there is one way to take away the tension from our experience of a ghost story, which is an overly straightforward explanation. "There is a ghost that appears and gouges out your eyes when you finish watching a certain video that you are definitely going to see." The moment these words come out, the ghost story loses all its unexpectedness, grasp, and twists. From there on, the ghost will definitely come out after our friend watches the video, the ghost will have it's eyes gouged out already. The crucial moment is no longer sudden anymore.

8. Good Wife

The material and the way of executing it are good, but it is indeed a pity that the ending has become convoluted. The wife, who was stressed by her husband and grandfather, was so impressive that it would have been scarier if she had actually killed them all. When she tells her husband that he would get sucked into a nightmare, it somehow felt that immersion was broken in the title.

9. I, Black Dress

It's a horror webtoon that adopts Ito Junji's often used introduction-development-twist-another twist style of narrative. The ending is erratic, but the bizarre visuals and settings arouse the reader's weird emotions. The drawback is that the density of the drawing style does not really express how serious the characters are.

10. The Returned Girls

Both the narrative and the direction are great and the story is also fun. It feels like seeing a bizarre, old horror comics that sold well in the days of black and white comics.

11.The Hole

If the perspective was unified, it could have been more immersive. If the title was composed in such direction, it feels like it could really have been much better.

The way the narrator progresses the story is good, but it is a pity that the perspective changed at the end of the story.

12.The Creek

There is a creek where flood occurs every two years, and once you fall into the torrents, you cannot get out. However, no one actually restricts access to the creek.

Even when a friend dies there, his friends are willing to take the danger of going back there to play.

The title is not convincing in terms of probability, and definitely not scary.

13. Best Friends

A friend who has an exceptional sense to identify a person's tendencies only by physiognomy gets nervous.

She dies as she can't tell her best friend that the friend's boyfriend is rather weird, not even by a text.

There's no explanation for why she is wearing the sweaters in such hot weather and why she is excessively obsessed with her friend.

However, the justification for the boyfriend remaining in the house was laid precisely.

14. Tinnitus

Story composition is perfect. Character composition is good, too.

The twist by countermining the ghost is impressive, and the female supporting character is attractive.

15. Missing

A genre where the supporting characters are very much knowledgeable for narrative explanation is enough with boy comics. Comics where the extras that are well informed about ghost stories are enough with high school ghost story comics.

There's nothing less tense than a character who has no intention to defeat a ghost, telling a story about a ghost at a critical moment.

16. Pouch Ghost

It's ideas are good but the drawing and the direction to express them are not good.

17. Red Woman's Forest

It could be said that there are no scenes that surprise the readers through special effects, but the atmosphere and the direction that is covered with red color and give off the feelings of madness are excellent.

Applause to the author Rangddo, whose direction skills improve every year.

18. Blind

It may be a personal complaint, but it makes no sense that the character can generate dozens of eyes on her body, and yet, she is still blind.
