A Good Day to be a Dog / Lee Hey / Line Webtoon

 

The girl who was born in an ordinary family, with so-so grades, with so-so face, with a good personality, passed the exam to be a public school teacher on the first try, and seems to be enjoying an easy life – Hana Han. 

But she hasn’t been in a proper relationship with guys. Dumped again, she’s now lost the count.  

 

The reason of being dumped is her odd condition of relationship: not to kiss her.

All the guys who went out with her thought the condition would be actually a joke or she would be changed after they go out, and had arguments with Hana who had never intended to withdraw the condition, so they all went to the same routine of having arguments and breaking up.

 

Such she has a secret crush: Bogum Lee, a fellow teacher of the same school. She is really into his beaming smile and personality, but she’s not asking him out because he would see her in strange eyes if she tells him her condition of relationship. 

In a drinking party with young teachers, Song Kim, Hana’s friendly coworker, tells her that kiss if she wants to, and while drunken high, Hana thinks that she want to kiss Bogum.

 

 

 

So, drunken high, she forcibly kisses him, pulling his clothing from the behind…

 

 

 

…And he wasn’t Bogum. It was Seon Jin, who was in Bogum’s clothing, and who also surely seemed to hate her always.

Hana leaves the party with her belongings and hurries to home as fast as she realized the situation, then she transforms into a dog, in front of her sis.

 

 

The reason why she put the condition of relationship, not to kiss her, was this: if she kisses a man, she transforms into a dog after midnight until dawn – which is her family heritage.

 

 

 

 

But she has a way to break the curse: kissing the man she kissed, in the form of a dog, would make her a human again. 

She thought her form of a cute dog with acting cute would make kissing him no problem, so she was waiting for the chance while buying him a dinner…

 

 

A problem occurred. And it was purely unexpected. It’s that Seon is scared by a dog.

It’s common to see works using the material of animal transformation, but it would be the fun to find how each work uses the material in its own way.

In usual fantasy set worlds, this kind of story contains the process how to break the curse, but in the work is based on the world of the reality, it can be more or less boring. Nevertheless, as it shows how to break the curse from the beginning, the development is fast, avoiding to make the readers tired. In the webtoon industry where everyone makes use of a fast-moving, weekly pace, this is a big merit.

In addition, projecting through Sis, the character inside the work, it narrates the situation in a realistic and accurate manner, like ‘without consent, kissing while drunk is also a sexual assault’, or ‘a weird woman who was buying a dinner and left without paying’, which would be also the readers’ thinking, being potentially uncomfortable while reading such part. Such projected narrations clearly state that the events are fictional, and it conveys healthy awareness on the social issues. It must be one of the secrets how a Good Day to be a Dog is beloved.

A Good Day to be a Dog, the third work by Lee Hey, who enjoyed a big popularity for beautiful drawing and amusing world setting as soon as publishing her debut work Sinryoung, is much expected for what fun it will give.
