[Webtoon Review] How can we tell someone normal: New Normal: Class 8
New normal: class 8. I believe it’s a work with many lessons. When this appeared for the first time on Line Webtoon, most of the comments were that it’s funny. Like we got a new comic thing or it’s fresh, and things like that. I think everyone believed the genre of this work is comic. Of course, I did. I thought it was a fresh and creative comedy. All along in the early stages, I thought so.
The boy with that big head is the protagonist.
Dongwon, the protagonist, has an enormously big head. He was born with a normal head, but his head grew bigger as he grew up. He was examined by doctors to no avail, and he got many treatments to no avail. He became familiar with this matter but people’s eyes are not kind to him. Everyone laughs at him, is surprised by him, or fears him. He also suffers much inconvenience from his big head. He even can’t get into his classroom as his head is wider than the door. But he’s a boy who feels sorry to other for he blocked others way, more than feeling sorry for himself. He has a warm heart as big as his head, but this life is too painful and heavy for him. So, his mother makes up her mind. To have him transferred to a high school where children with various individualities are gathered.
The first meeting of the two. They become the best friends.
On the first day of his transfer, he meets a boy who is not surprised by his head. The protagonist is surprised a lot as he meets the boy who greets him with a handshake as he saw nothing. But something’s strange. The boy’s arms were quite long. Really long. As if it’s a rubber band. It was more than his imagination with that friends with various individualities are gathered.
Dongwon, surprised by himself being not surprised.
The protagonist gets surprised very much from looking at the boy with very long and wobbling arms. He is panicked from looking a person not normal like him. He has believed that only he’s abnormal, and he had no immunity to face it directly. Like that he was waiting for other classmates. The others were also beyond his imagination.
The first classmate he met at the school had quite long and flexible arms, and the second he met had a super long neck. Like a giraffe. No, his neck was much longer than giraffe. (I thought that his neck could be bent.)

This time, the boy with many arms. (He reminds me of Sahasrabhuja.)
It was a scene much beyond his imagination. It was a class only with very special individuality classmates. Thus, they are not surprised to see each other. There are classmates who has a pair of horns in his head, who has an enormous body, who has really good hearing, who has a tail, and who is so small to get in a pencil box. The protagonist is surprised by their appearance, and he again is surprised by no one sees him as a surprising character. After a while, the homeroom teacher comes in, and Dongwon, with a surprised look, askes the boy with long arms about the teacher. Because as he saw everyone not being normal, so he thought the homeroom teacher would be not normal. But looking at the teacher again, he finds a ring of halo above the teacher’s head.
Furthermore, this handsome teacher has a ring that stands for an angel… (But he’s not an angel. Maybe he’s not.)
In the class 8 of the school, where the protagonist is transferred, no one was not normal, including the teacher. I thought much about why the title includes normal, and I found an interesting comment from the comment area of this webtoon. It was from an Internet user and it was like this: Dongwon Kam (the protagonist who has a big head), Sunghoon Nam (the one with a long arms), Jungwoo Han (the one with a long neck), Sungjae Han (the one with many arms), Eunji Han (the one small enough to get into a pencil box), Ayoung Jung (Dongwon’s crush who has a tail), and Kyoungri Park (the most beautiful in the work, who has cat’s ears) all became to have such bodies because of their complexes. For example, the person Kyoungri Park suffered much from people talking about her too beautiful looks. She was harassed from people name calling like ‘the foxy bitch’. The comment explains her cat’s ear with the reasoning. Another example, Ayoung, who is Dongwon’s crush, is a target of envy and jealousy from her former classmates, so she is rumored that she seduces boys like she wags her tail. This opinion seems quite reasonable for her tail. So, people speculate that in the end, the classmates will overcome their complex, being truly normal ones. Only the author would know the end, but I think this version of ending would be good.
In the early stages, it sought to be byungmat, gag, and comedy, but as the episodes go on, the drama components stood out. It seems the author chose that way because the characters in the work are mostly charming. It brought many controversies as it shows much on the appearance. But in a sense, the fact also proves its popularity. Moreover, despite how everyone takes this work personally, but I think the author expresses what he wants to talk about in the work. If you want to know that, you have to read this webtoon till the end, and I think this work has enough value to make you do so.
