In the fairytale Cinderella, she never loses hope although stepmother and jealous stepsisters give her a hard time. On the day of prince’s palace ball, a kind fairy appears and prepares her a beautiful ball gown and a pumpkin-made carriage so that Cinderella attends the ball. But when the clock chimes midnight, the spell ends and she flees the palace, losing one of her slippers. The prince searches the owner of the glass slipper and eventually finds Cinderella out. Just as Cinderella has to go back home before midnight, there is a woman who has the destiny to go back home before midnight because she’s cursed to transform into a dog at midnight. A webtoon about a story of the woman's curse is A Good Day to be a Dog. 

 

Hena, the main character of A Good Day to be a Dog, is currently working as a teacher after passing the teacher certification examination, a difficult exam for any applicant, at once even with an excellent grade. On the other hand, she has a bitter truth; she’s never been in a relationship so far because she was dumped by men right before she was about to go out. The reason is that Hena is looking for a man who could go out with her under the condition that they wouldn’t kiss. So far, she’s never found a man who agrees with that condition. At first, all the men thought the condition was a joke and continued to date Hena for several times. But, after they were more involved in the relationship with her, they found Hena was serious about not ‘kissing’, and then they left her. That’s how she’s never been in a real relationship. In fact, there is a reason why Hena wants to have a relationship with this unreasonable condition.

 

Once upon a time, there was a boy who lived in a village, and he was famous for a naughty boy in the village. The villagers began to ignore the boy who always made a joke and lied. When the boy began to be ignored by people, he was angry and took his anger out on a dog that passed by. His anger brought death to the dog. Unfortunately, the dog was loved by a mountain spirit. The mountain spirit found that and became very upset. So he put a curse; when he would become an adult and kiss a woman, he would turn into a dog every dawn. This curse has passed down to descendants. And, the current descendant of the boy is Hena, and the mountain spirit’s curse disables Hena to kiss a man.

 

Her only sanctuary is Mr. Lee Bogum, who works at the same school. Secretly loving Bogum, Hena finds out Bogum likes dogs, thinking that he will understand and like her although he sees her in a cursed appearance. So Hena kisses Bogum under the influence of alcohol in the staff dinner. But, after she’s awake, she’s surprised that she didn’t kiss Bogum, but Seon. Realizing that she made a huge mistake, Hena comes back home before midnight and the curse eventually turns her into a dog as soon as midnight. When Hena’s sister finds it out, she tells Hena the way of breaking the curse which is to kiss a person again who she kisses in a dog’s appearance. When Hena finds it, she’s at a loss. 

 

Because Hena isn’t close to Seon usually. Seon avoids Hena only because he feels uncomfortable with Hena. And when Hena takes a hint, she also avoids Seon who avoids her for no reason. Still, Hena tries to approach Seon to break the curse. Hena tells Seon that she likes to apologize for her mistake in the staff dinner and treat him dinner which is her first operation to break the curse. Her operation is to drink with Seon, resolve a misunderstanding on both ends, and make up for her mistake done by the influence of alcohol. And, Hena forcibly recommends Seon a drink, waiting for midnight.

 

Finally, it’s midnight. Hena goes to an alley in advance, and secretly calls Seon, and waits in a dog’s appearance. This is how Hana tries to break the curse successfully but it causes a bigger problem. It’s Seon who has a cynophobia and it is a very serious one. Turning into a dog, Hana forcibly approaches him, but it only makes Seon more alerted. Will Hana’s curse be broken? Will there be more trials that come up for them? In A Good Day to be a Dog, there are solid supporting roles besides Hena, Seon, and Bogum; Chaea who is an opportunist and a fox-like character, and Yul who lives with Seon, knows about Hena’s curse, and actively helps her to break the curse. Since each character is attractive, the story is never boring.

The reason why I started reading A Good Day to be a Dog in the first place was its attractive drawings. I think lovely colors and sketches are elements that stand out the fantasy romance part.

Spring is coming these days, and this webtoon will be trending with a tickling and fluttering story like spring breezes in this season. A Good Day to be a Dog is the webtoon that I strongly recommend those who like to see a sweet romance webtoon.
