Will do love between a human and a werewolf work out?

They say a story of a werewolf is in many places in the world. Legends on werewolves are various. In the places where wolves are living or was living, there is various legends with almost no exception to it. Maybe it’s because wolves are living all around the world. A common thing from the various tales is, they turn into a wolf from a man to attack livestock or people and eat their raw meat, in a lunatic state. There’s a webtoon on such a werewolf: Days of Hana.

 

The author of Days of Hana is Seokwoo, the author of a famous webtoon Orange Marmalade. The author, like the previous work, tells a story of the romance between a human and a non-human. In the previous work the female protagonist was a vampire, and in this work the male protagonist is a werewolf. As Orange Marmalade was a well-made one, the readers showed much expectations on the next work. The author might have felt a lot of pressure from that. Far from my concern, Days of Hana, the next one of Orange Marmalade, answers the call of expectations with solid and charming story.

 

Days of Hana is a webtoon depicting love between a human and a werewolf. But it’s not only lovely and sweet all along. It shows dirty and cruel aspects of the humanity, represented by discrimination against werewolves in the work. The setting is, werewolves are allowed to live with humans, but they’re not welcomed by humans. It’s a cruel world, where werewolves live together with humans, but humans put a leash on them not to be able to turn into a wolf, breeding them like a slave.

 

One day in a cold winter, a wolf was walking around, covered with blood. When the wolf looked back to the loading sound of rifles, the soldiers were aiming for the wolf, then a gunshot rings. A young girl Hana and her family discovers a boy covered with blood, and he was a pup of the wolf. They take him to their home, name him Haru, treat his wound, and take him in as a family member. Hana’s family didn’t discriminate werewolves like other families. The story starts as he finds peace of mind and he starts to go to the same school with Hana. Hana, who lived with Haru from their childhood, thinks him as her younger brother. But Haru comes to have different mind on Hana.

 

The female protagonist of Days of Hana, Hana, did not think of Haru more than her younger brother. One day, she starts to see him as a man. At the moment, a senior boy student comes close to her. She wanted to be close with him to keep herself from thinking Haru as a man, but she put off by him for a certain incident and coldly throws him away. After then, her affection on Haru gets bigger and bigger by day.

 

In Days of Hana, Haru is a werewolf. He became a half werewolf as his savageness degenerated, and he lives on, lost his memory at the time he was a baby. It’s been a long time since he was keeping her in his heart, more than as an older sister. He expresses his heart as it is, but Hana coldly turns him down again and again. As secret crushing of Haru gets caught by another werewolf girl, he tries to keep himself from her, but he can’t get his heart back, as his feeling is too deep. Meanwhile, a boy comes near Hana, and he’s somewhat odd and suspicious. As they say a hunch for a bad thing never misses, he tries to protect her from the boy. But the boy is bothered by Haru, a werewolf living with Hana. Now the story is developing around Hana and Haru, who are fond of each other but keeping themselves from their honest heart because of what they are born.

 

Days of Hana makes the story more fondly and romantic with the drawing style of the author. So, it gives the readers the feeling that watching a romance drama. It might be from its fable-like feeling, as it uses various color sets and delicate sketching. This is also a very personal opinion.

Days of Hana is a romance, and the violent aspects of the humanity in the work make the romance shine more. So, I wait for the day it is published every week. Some readers say they want to see only the romantic materials, but with such dramatic elements it gives me more sentimental feelings.

Days of Hana began its serialization on April 5, 2017, and now on the episode 98. Story development is fast and immersion is superb. This is a webtoon strongly recommended for the readers who are fed up with usual romances or who are looking for a webtoon like a TV show or movie. That’s Days of Hana.
