Webtoon recommendation by artist -- Masatokki

If you’re looking for a brain battle manhwa armed with logics, you should have read Masatokki’s manhwa at least for once. If you didn’t, you really should. Because Masatokki is almost the only storywriter specialized only in brain battles with quite a fan base from his logic and sophistry.

But beware: Masatokki is one of story writers being criticized as much as his fan base is large. In particular, the problems of his clumsy translation-like tone and his stories which is too much submerged to its own logics are even criticized from his fans. The problems didn’t get better for many years, and finally his fans gave up, just regarding them as Masatokki’s identity.

It’s like, no matter how you complain on a game already on the market, about the odd name of in-game currency is strange or unfavorable character designs, they can’t change it for you. Such things are take-it-or-leave-it thing. Thus, if you curse me for recommending this artist, I will redirect the glory of vulgar words to the artist.

1. Room for two – an armchair argument which is strangely not strange

When a man woke up, it was a sealed room he doesn’t know. He becomes aware of that he is falsely accused of a serial killer, and he gets threatened by a man, A, the person who imprisoned him. Who is the A? Did he really commit murder?

Room for two is a work which is maximized Masatokki’s ability to lead a story in a restricted situation. It reversed Masatokki’s criticized point that characters don’t act while they sit and argue all the time into a strength, by making a situation where only arguments are allowed. Reasonings of characters are not too much complicated and psychological depiction of characters are not too much unnatural, so the readers can immerse in the work while they read it.

2. Lucid Dream – Masatokki staying out from explanation

This work is a short story. A short story doesn’t feel like Masatokki. Characters don’t explain too much or carried away in own logics too much to twist the work. The result of Masatokki leaving a bit of his characteristics, Lucid Dream, is strangely the most comfortable work to read.

A bit of instruction is here: with lucid dream as its material, the short story matches well with the story development unique to Masatokki. A potential sequel to it is much expected.

3. Coffee Milk Myth – a unique battle genre work

To pick one work representing Masatokki to the best, Coffee Milk Myth must be taken into the consideration. Working in harmony with its drawing artist, the unique setting of god of coffee and god of milk, the directing breaking cliché, and the drawing reflected various tastes -- it’s a neat work in all aspects.

However, it feels like quite dull for its drawing style, so if you want a lively action, I don’t recommend it for you.

4. Matchstick 20 – World’s No.1 Series by Masatokki

World’s best geniuses wander the world with a watch that world’s best scientist made. The protagonist, world’s best storyteller, is one among them.

One day, the protagonist gets involved into a hostage situation set up by world’s best terrorist. The protagonist negotiates for his freedom with a condition of telling a story, and the storyteller’s life-and-death story begins.

The protagonist’s character is really fascinating as he develops his story only with his imagination and some clues, without any prior knowledge. Added with the artist’s unique color sense and directing, it gets even more heat. If you want to set your foot in World’s No.1 Series, it’s a must-read for you.
