[Webtoon Review] G’day: not good days of house-sharing with an untouchable killer

Shion flies to Australia to find his elder sister, who became out of contact. He goes to the shared house his sister stayed and there he comes to meet suspicious Korean residents, then he finds traces of his sister from a mysterious man, Hans…

Lezhin always writes an editor’s comment beside introduction of the work.* And I have been never shocked like this one.

*T/N: the comment is available in Korean pages only.

‘You already know who the killer is, but you can’t point him as the killer.’

What is happening inside this seemingly mystery thriller webtoon?

The background of this webtoon is Australia. The country never missed the first place every time the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development announces Your Better Life Index. Looking at the points on safety, civic engagement, education, jobs, income, and else, I feel Australia like a synonym for the utopia. As I hear that the actual residents saying it’s fantastic, I know it’s not a lie.

Maybe that’s the reason why I think of Silent Hill closed and abandoned in the middle of utopia, when I add this webtoon to the common image of Melbourne, Australia.

In Australia, the multi-racial and multi-cultural country, the people whom the protagonist finds a wall between are his fellow residents from the same country, Koreans. In the scene of the first greeting, ‘you came here to die too, eh?’, I felt damp.

Like the editor’s comment says, it shows the killer as the webtoon begins. The protagonist knows it too, but he has no evidence. It’s like playing with both the killer and the one who chases him. As the killer sees the protagonist like a mouse in a maze, the irritation reaches its highest. It gave me goosebumps when the killer said ‘so it’s you! Ahn Shion!!’ while others say they don’t know his sister in the greeting party. The residents other than him is annoying, too. Why don’t they tell something they know?

G’day presents very intense horror. This horror is felt very clear on the protagonist. Because it’s not imaginary, but real. But he can’t see it. He can’t touch it, too. Even the residents at the place turn their eyes away from his horror despite they know how he feels. Like that horrible existence is not a human. Yes, the killer doesn’t see a person as a human being. He plays with them like they’re mice in a maze. Maybe because of that, his looks are grotesque like a devil possesses a body of a human. With a pale skin, a gaping mouth, and hollow eyes, like in a common horror movie, he looks at people: the protagonist, the residents, and the readers.

Many horror movies only startles people or makes them scream without a reason, but this webtoon was so impressive that I would see the result if it is made a movie.

I was curious what G’day means, so I searched and found it’s ‘good day’ in the Australian manner. Are they having a good day for real? I hope you find it out in the webtoon G’day.
