There are many frameworks to classify Yuri genre. To pick the most common and general one among them, it’s classification by target reader: for men or for women. As one of Yuri fan, I have been using the dichotomic classification, despite it’s a rough classification.

Then which side Lilith belongs to is… Of course, it’s yuri, and mature as well. As it is written as GL/R. But I’m yet to conclude which side it belongs to, for men or for women. Because, there are two different fascinations residing together in this work.

The protagonist, Chun Jaehee, is a Korean literature teacher of girl’s high with feminine looks and personality. And she’s a hardcore submissive masochist. You may be a bit disappointed if you expected an immoral story of a naïve literature teacher gets addicted to SM and defiled. Because she’s already familiar to the world of SM and has a regular partner – in other words, she’s an expert.

Around Jaehee who is so charming as a sex partner and BDSM practitioner, Zhu Huilin, a scion of Chinese rich family and the board director of Jaehee’s school (of course, she is also Jaehee’s play partner), Yoon Sulhwa, who lost her parents by an accident and lived with Jaehee for a while. The story begins with the characters who have own differences but are all attracted to Jaehee and related to (or, would be related to) BDSM in any shape or form.

Let me remind you about the dichotomy on classification of yuri genre. First, in Lilith, physical relationships between characters are much emphasized. It is true when we can see that relationships between Jaehee and supporting characters are not an emotional love nor romantic relationship, but so-called play partners for sexual amusement.

It’s not a mild lesbian sex – sex toys like whips, ropes, blindfolds, and dildos, and coercive orders for humiliation and declarations of submission are rampant in here, and their suggestiveness is definitely not low. On the other hand, Jaehee is a woman full of desire: she wets her underwear during the class while she dreams of playing with Sulhwa, who was once her student when she was young and now a fully-grown woman; she also contacts a barely met woman for the thing while Huilin is gone for a business trip.

I feel like I must tell you that its depiction on sexuality is quite splendid. It doesn’t only focus on depicting the acts. It also adds excitement with emotional exchange between two women, suggestive expressions from their uncommon SM relationship, scenes of sexual acts of nude women with the same drawing used to depict their everyday elegantly.

At the same time, the work deals with sentimental and emotional relationships between characters. The complicated relationship between Jaehee and Sulhwa, their delicate feelings toward each other, jealousy and conflict between Sulhwa and Huilin -- which are contents common to yuri for women.

In short, this is a well composed masterwork loyal to the proper goal of its genre. Three genres of yuri, SM (mature), and romance are mixed each by about one third, and even if you’re a fan of only one of them, or not interested in one among them, you can enjoy it surely enough. At the time I’m writing this review, the episodes are not so many; but they’re enough to see through its merits, and at the same time they’re not too many for the new readers to start reading.
