[Webtoon Review] 4 Cut Hero: a fantasy comic, full of otaku flavor and full of wrong weirdos
I have an elder brother, who doesn’t often read comics as he did, for now he has a job. But so many times he praised this webtoon, 4 Cut Hero. This is a remake of 4 Cut Hero, a serial in Ruliweb, and now it shows higher quality than its older version, which was a rough sketch. (…or so my brother says. I didn’t read the older version yet.) So, this 4 Cut Hero was the most expected one in my list to write a review. As it claims to be a fantasy comic genre, I clicked on it with much expectation how surprising and comic events would unfold. And now, I dare to tell you that it’s safe to throw away the old saying ‘The more you hope, the more you disappoint’.
From the prologue, several comic components make my laughter outburst, crushing all the images we have for a hero who saved the world. The hero cries out ‘shut up and die so I can make a name for myself!’, and he reads Demon King’s porn mag, talking to himself ‘under different circumstance, we could have been friends’. The hero, who achieve his great ambition by saving a princess, saves the princess who is a beauty as he is told (and who is also a prince, not a princess), then he flees the scene, embarrassed. He tries many job interviews to make a living, but as he’s rejected from all of them, he falls into despair. So, the hero becomes an unemployed otaku.
Zena, who wants to find him and to have her revenge, is hiding herself from other’s eyes, but she also had to make a living, so she works as a part-timer at a maid café, in an odd clothing. She’s also a part-timer at a fast food restaurant at the evening, and a part-timer at construction sites. As her looks at the time she was one of Four Generals, under Demon King’s direct command, was not so well-conducted or conventional, so she seems fine that way. Well, she was even tempered in her childhood with Fogue’s bad hobby. As the Hero, an otaku, visits the maid café, they meet again, and Fogue, one of Four Generals as well, becomes to live on the hero as he couldn’t make a living as the Royal Army corners him. The hero takes good care of him while he throws tantrums at Fogue, so Fogue even is deeply moved by the tsundere hero. What an unpredictably nonsensical and crazy story this is.
You may think why a reviewer spreads the spoilers like that, but these things are nothing. The author spreads unexpected tiny plot reversals here and there and play with characters, and the development is so fun and pleasant that one can’t stop reading it until the end.
What I did for my Monday sickness at Sunday night or Monday morning was watching a comedy show, Gag Concert. Like fans of Infinite Challenge who are told to not make an appointment at 7 pm Saturday, I was a fan of Gag Concert. And I’m still a fan. If I miss a premiere for some reason, I watch it on mobile the next day, even on my way to work.
But after starting to read it, I didn’t think about Gag Concert for the time being. Because I read it on mobile ceaselessly on my way to work, waiting a friend, and lying on the bed, until the end. Though I read it so non-stop to the end, so I had to return to Gag Concert just in a week. That’s the reason why I can’t quit Lezhin. Every time I think ‘what should I try for the next time as I’m done with this one?’
To bored workers, tired mothers, students after their exams, and all, I recommend this work. This was the jackpot webtoon, 4 Cut Hero! Everybody, enjoy this webtoon!
