Captain Marvel - The Birth of 'One Punch Woman'

While I hope that more movies that deal with various characters, backgrounds, and histories, it is hard to support such movies if they are not interesting. While Captain Marvel broadens the horizons of the superhero, it is still ‘fun.’ Of course, being ‘fun’ is a relative matter. Below are the explanations of why I consider Captain Marvel ‘fun’. I couldn’t help but include the spoilers, so for those of you who haven’t watched the movie yet or are not planning to watch it any time soon, I recommend not reading this column from this point on.

I watched Captain Marvel without knowing that there was a twist. When the group that main character was part of convinced me that the Skrulls are the villains, I nodded through it. The Skrulls’ appearance was also very villain-like. It turns out towards the end of the movie that the Skrulls were an unjustly persecuted group. It appears to be a plot intended to raise awareness about the behavior of judgment based on prejudice. The intention was roughly thrown, yet it is a message necessary for modern society. I hope many people get to watch the movie without knowing about the twist so that they could see the creator’s intention.

The journey of the main character who lost her memory, gradually gathering information and finally becoming aware of herself was quite engaging. Nick Fury serves a great role along in the journey. I loved the fact that the person who holds the key information about the main character was her friend and a colleague. Had the movie try to squeeze out the fun by talking about the secret of the family, it would have been boring. In Captain Marvel, there is no romance either. Captain Marvel has shown that the friendship, building comradeship with new colleagues and solidarity with colleagues that endured social pressure together can fill a feature film with interest.

This is also the point where I feel Captain Marvel made more progress than its rival in female hero movie, Wonder Woman. In Wonder Woman, of course, Chris Pine was good looking, and the character he played was charming, the love story towards the end of the movie made the whole movie droopy. Besides, the movie looked old-fashioned because the relationship between the two main characters have been depicted too important and desperate when, in reality, it wasn’t long after they met. Personally, I think the freshness of Captain Marvel is a more fitting sentiment for 2019.

The suit was more reasonable than that of Wonder Woman. Shouldn’t the hero’s suit protect the body and add their ability? In Wonder Woman’s case, there is a problem in that more than 50% of bare skin is exposed. All the punches and being swept on the floor…the bare skin would hurt even for the meta human like the wonder woman. Who is the suit for anyway? For the audience? Captain Marvel’s suit is designed to protect the entire body, has a built-in helmet that allows her to survive in space, and has various other functions, such as communication and translation. Wearing a costume that emphasized function may have been intended to prevent a female hero from becoming routinely ‘eye-catching.’ This can also be a great point to keep in mind for the domestic movies that depict women who fight.

There were also some boring points. The action scenes in and out of the subway were the one. Fighting the Skrull who changed its appearance to an old lady was interesting, but after then, the scene was unnecessarily long and repetitive. It was also regrettable to see the main character’s ‘if you fall seven times, come back on your eighth’ scene, which was clearly intended for touching emotion. The direction was pretty obvious, but it is largely due to the fact the scene was included in the trailer. The next scene I saw from the trailer passed through my head when the main character kept falling during the scenes that showed her childhood. When the scene I imagined came out as expected, I wasn’t touched but rather laughed. The trailer that attracts interest while not disturbing the fun of watching the whole movie would have been better.

Anyways, the main character who wakes up again knows who she is. She was a willful and strong woman who crossed the line drawn before her as the limit, and a professional worker with a great work ethic. Once again, she overcomes the limit, becomes the one punch woman. The moment of reincarnation as heroin was a climax strong enough to become the best of Marvel’s cinematic universe. However, her being too strong also reduced the feeling of tension for the fighting scenes that followed. I’m comforting my regretful mind, hoping to see actions that are tenser and shows more characteristics of Captain Marvel in Avengers: Endgame.
