Tower of God is the work has a long history of serial publishing, long enough to be not missed when we talk about Line Webtoon’s most famous webtoons, and a deep fan base.

A mysterious boy, Bam. It’s a webtoon set on a huge tower, with a goal of reaching the top of the tower in pursuit of Rachel who is everything of Bam.

Tower of God have been enjoying the top-level popularity from its beginning of serial publishing as the distinctive charms like the characters with strong presence, the fresh world set, mini game-like duels to climb the tower, and the hints on the true reason to climb to the top stand out.

◆ Going up

Because it’s basically a story mainly about the process of Bam’s growth, Bam in the first episode and Bam of now are almost totally different characters, even in the visual aspect. Moreover, the overall drawing and the quality is much upgraded, too. I’d say it’s a webtoon kept going up, truly like climbing a tower.

As it is a webtoon which has been on the top place for a long time, there was many plot reversals and its hints are countless enough to the level of counting is meaningless. But many people are starting to say that it’s not fun as it was in its old days; why is that?

◆ Going aside

Personally, I think the appearance of Jah Wangnan brought the worst dark age of Tower of God. Jah Wangnan is a main character once replaced Bam, who briefly retired from the Tower of God, and the anagram of his name meaning “I’m a prince”* brought many hints to the plot and made the readers Conan the detective, but he’s still a character with no outstanding role nor development. 

*T/N: In Korean, reversed word of jah-wang-nan, nan wangja, forms a sentence meaning “I’m a [the] prince’.

The characters appeared with this character also brought the dark age to the Tower of God, failing to receive love of the readers. Added to the reactions of ‘it becomes boring as the story slips away’ or ‘the new characters are too tiring to read’, the recent published game also didn’t receive a good response, making the readers wonder Tower of God is entering the dark age. 

And with that dark age, the pause on serial publishing became more frequent and longer. It’s fortunate that the drawing has been developed gradually, and as the characters from the beginning reappeared in the recent episodes it’s preparing to go up again.

◆ Preparing to go up again

The appearance of the characters who enjoyed popularity from the early stages as much as Bam. The stories piled up of Jah Wangnan and his companions got to remain vague, nevertheless I’m just glad to see the companions of Bam.

As Bam and Rachel encountered again and important events are happening, quenching the thirst of the readers to go up, it can be said now it’s ready to go up.
