Not many reviews focus on the author. So, I am going to be the first one today. The first step is important in any work. A moon lander once said: ‘That's one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind.’ There are neither trivial thing nor meaningless thing. Someday this kind of review could be a standard.

The story writer of a popular Line webtoon Noblesse, Jeho Son, was originally a fantasy novel writer. He made his debut with BecaUse. It was quite a famous one at that time. The drawing artist Kwangsu Lee revealed he accepted the proposal to work together, because he was also was a fan of BecaUse. Debut made from the meeting of an artist and a fan, how romantic. I want to talk with my favorite artist someday, too. I won’t deal with BecaUse now, but in a word, it wasn’t for my taste.

 

             

This scene is the scene which comes into people’s mind when they talk about Noblesse. ‘Kneel, this is where your eyes meet mine.’ The line is good, but the aura of Rai suppressing the enemy in no time was so impressive. Noblesse is now come much far from the time, but the readers still remember the scene. This is the strength of Jeho Son. He knows how to make one big stylish scene. One could ask that wasn’t it from the drawing artist, but in BecaUse, there is also a scene releasing a big blow in a similar way. So, it’s the style of Jeho Son. Being stylish. Jeho Son pours his everything to make a stylish scene. Because of that, the impression of each scene is engraved into the readers, and he made them remember the name Noblesse.

It’s a really cool synergy. Mixing drawing capability of Kwangsoo Lee and capability of being stylish of Jeho Son together, now being stylish of this work overflows. Every scene is stylish and the protagonist is cool, so who would hate this webtoon? But as time passes, this directing method of focusing on being stylish meets its limitation.

The protagonist must be cool. Jeho Son tend to raise his protagonist too high. In BecaUse, it was same, but nobody said anything in there if he did the same. Because the content was the protagonist hunting girls around. However, in Noblesse, he shouldn’t do that. Noblesse already had many popular characters and it needed to control and balance the power of the characters, so he shouldn’t do that in Noblesse. Every finish is done by Rai, so the gravity of other characters becomes less.

It’s not only about the gravity of characters. It should show the power of characters, but as they don’t grow up or show their strength, the readers come to think like this: ‘are they all just weak except for Rai?’ To recover from such recognition, growth of the characters had to be done again beside the adventure already they did. It is waste of space. The directing too much focusing on being stylish returned as a poison.

Jeho Son knows how to be stylish. But when this stylishness does not blend well with the work or it becomes too much, and the readers want stronger stimuli or proper narrative, it loses its power. I hope this work be remembered as a cool work in the future; so I pray him open his eyes.
