A webtoon drunk from the title, <I’m not Drunk>. Something is giving me a feeling like I have to say the words slurred. I can tell the characters drawn at the main screen are already drunk, for their faces are red.

A drink for feeling down, another drink for being high. Next day we wake up only to find a few more pages added on our black history: its artist Youngchun introduces. Why do I feel like the name is something to do with drink? Youngchun Pocha*. Youngchun soju. Youngchun Haejang-guk** with 50 years of tradition. (I’m sorry for playing with your name, sir.) Moreover, every episode is numbered as 1st drink, 2nd drink, and so on. Maybe some cans of beer at the side a drawing tablet gave the artist such an inspiration.

*pocha is a type of Korean pub.

**Haejang-guk is a popular Korean dish, literally means ‘hangover soup’. 

Perhaps when season 1 ends and season 2 begins they will be numbered as 1st round and 2nd round. As a reader I feel like I should bring some drinks to scroll down again. But pity, the refrigerator is out of alcohol already. (Hey, I’m not drunk now, so don’t get the wrong idea.)

Anyway, <I’m not Drunk> begins from lying down, is comprised of quite simple episodes. The episodes are either we’re too familiar with or where we’ve already been, so nothing is particularly special in this webtoon. From there, however, we discover the charm of <I’m not drunk>.

First, <I’m not Drunk> empathizes with us. Confessing love while drunk, embarrassing memory at the fest, running to the last stop, confessing love while drunk, embarrassing memory at the fest, confessing love while drunk, running to the last stop … and such. And keeping telling same words again and again while you’re drunk.

Second, a simple and clean drawing. Every protagonist in each episode is drunk, and only the red face is what tells if they’re drunk or not. The face and skin are so red that I wonder they suffer a liver cirrhosis. The characters are simplified to no eyes, nose or mouth; and I think if they had eyes, the color must be yellow. (People, excessive consumption of alcoholic beverage has various side effects like liver cancer, liver cirrhosis, and so forth.)

Personally, the best part of it was, it was easy to read. It’s not hard to swallow because there’s nothing to understand beforehand. It uses the everyday language we use in our conversation. Most of contents these days, including webtoons, use some awkward, stern and excessively exaggerated tone, word and emotion those we don’t use in our lives. In this webtoon, there’s no such falseness. Because the words it uses are no more or no less than what we use at our comfortably drinking table with our friends.

As it is free, often there’s no episode to read anymore. It makes me so used to the situations and characters in the episodes that I feel like they are my friends.

To read <I’m not Drunk> without a side effect, try reading it while you’re drunk. As you drink an episode or two, you may search “fried chicken and draft beer” on Google or call your friend to drink soju together at the table in front of a nearby convenience store.
